New Green REACH compliant caps

June 2014

A new safety norm in the Petrochem will soon reject one of the components of plastic caps because it may damage the health once transforming into gas. This component is Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) also known as DOP which represents 39% of the composition of the caps. As from February 2015 this component will be forbidden. We are one of the first Refractory Anchor System suppliers that found a solution to stay compliant with the REACH regulations.

REACH Regulations

REACH is the Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals. It streamlines and improves the former legislative framework on chemicals of the European Union (EU).
The main aims of REACH are to ensure a high level of protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals, the promotion of alternative test methods, and the free circulation of substances on the internal market and enhancing competitiveness and innovation. REACH makes industry responsible for assessing and managing the risks posed by chemicals and providing appropriate safety information to their users

Phthalates

Phthalates are widely used as additives in a range of plastics and other materials that are found in many consumer products. They make plastics, such as PVC, soft and flexible. They are not chemically bound to plastics, so they can be released from consumer products into the environment. There is public concern about phthalates because of their widespread use and occurrence in the environment as well as their potential effects on human health. There is a wide range of different phthalates, which each have specific properties, uses, and health effects.

DEHP is a low molecular weight (LMW) phthalates with 3-6 carbon atoms in the backbone of the side chains. These plasticizers will be phased out by the EU by February 2015.

SILICON's solution

Our solution to stay REACH compliant is to replace DEHP with di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) which is REACH-certified. DINP is a High Molecular Weight (HMW) phthalates. These phthalates have increased permanency and durability.

From our perspective, being REACH compliant is the priority. Our aim is to take the necessary actions to remain REACH compliant both now and into the future. We now have all common size caps without DEHP in stock. That means you will be ahead of the new regulations when you purchase our caps. If you need the new REACH compliant caps with your refractory anchors, please specify it on your inquiry. If it's not specified, standard caps will be offered until February 2015. After that date the new Green REACH compliant caps will be our new standard caps.
